I've made several blankets in the last month and sewn some little girl nighties. It was past time to get my granddaughters in some Grandma made PJ's. I only have a picture of the third one made. This was a pattern cut out, but unfinished, from my mother's craft supplies. She's been gone for 16 years. I should have finished this many years ago for the granddaughter it was meant for, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Now it's on her great granddaughter. Better late than never, right?<br />

Here is where I put all the pins I took out of the pattern. I'll leave them, always.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There have been blankets. It's funny how each one is so different from the rest, yet each makes me happy in it's own way. I smile when I look at the blankets still in my possession. I smile more, when I look through my sold items on Etsy. I can only hope to one day sell many more. I'll keep making them until they take over a room of their own. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This pattern is from a quilt design called Swoon. I've admired the quilts made from it and chose to make just one giant block, instead of the 9 to 16 that would be in a quilt. It helped to draw it in Paint on the computer and spend time playing with color before I started cutting into sweaters.</div>

Color! So many beautiful colors. There was plenty of cashmere in this, too.</div>

Cashmere, it's the new black.</div>

This week's blanket. Who knew I had so many pinks? I did, that's who!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This isn't even all of them. I got the striped wool in the binding, from my sister, it is too soft to use for anything that will be stuffed. But, perfect for the pretty edge to this blanket.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Folded up and ready for a new home. I may have trouble sending this one. Quite a few of the sweaters were cashmere. So girly and soft. I can see it taken everywhere, used to make forts and standing in as a super hero cape.</div>

<br />
<div>
I'm so happy these are finally finished. My customer had a bunch of felted sweaters, mostly cashmere, she had been saving for something special. She sent them to me and requested two blankets for her son and daughter. She liked the look of large geometric pieces and some random circles. I've been adding a crocheted star to all my blankets. I made about a hundred of these last summer. They go so fast, that I had a hard time quitting, then. It was like picking blackberries or pulling weeds, just one more.</div>
<div>
All the blankets I usually make are quilt designs and very orderly. She doesn't know how much harder random is for me. These aren't my usual style, but I'm pleased with the way they turned out. Large pieces should be easier, but not for this OCD type. I spent too much of my time obsessing over placement.</div>
<div>
I feel they would have benefited from some orange or green. I always like a complimentary color thrown in.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was the first one I made.The long strips of cashmere weren't as easy to sew as I had thought they would be. They are so soft and tender. I cut shorter pieces for the next one.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The blue stripe was too bold to use in big pieces, I put one long strip off center, a couple smallish pieces and used up every last bit of it in the binding. I filled in the binding length with the lightest blue. Love the stripes around the edge. Now, the whole blanket gets to share that wonderful sweater!</div>

Wow! I haven't been here in such a long time. I make things, they just haven't made it to the blog.<br />
It's time for Easter Bunnies again. Today I cut out 6 boys and 8 girls. 2 of them are already spoken for, but the rest will be going to my Etsy shop.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsF1YcELe8wzz23QXqynnRnks4QQkwRCCDgtzaMpEMmhmEVkNp-g-M-IkwUx9KC6xapJ6alGzpmpBy9W3YTcuZ_Ksb225LEh4bhTrA8WHWh7mRavyXEo-s-YaDleq732gP05V1YzH8OfQ/s1600/DSCI2082.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsF1YcELe8wzz23QXqynnRnks4QQkwRCCDgtzaMpEMmhmEVkNp-g-M-IkwUx9KC6xapJ6alGzpmpBy9W3YTcuZ_Ksb225LEh4bhTrA8WHWh7mRavyXEo-s-YaDleq732gP05V1YzH8OfQ/s320/DSCI2082.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
These are the few left over from last year. The white chocolate girl sold today and I'll take her to the Post Office tomorrow. I've had the chocolate mold for decades, a present from my Mom one Easter. I made the pattern for the wool bunnies from the shape of this mold. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNlsfNNlZpxzYXj27RcTQ8x8bx5Pr61YOoT_m_JfdroHood7r-60d4Y92w5xlDnZe7Zrd4OzTWEotfhL9EUPLP_wEQVH5VPXGf2hygQgICZDjJ4XjXchpGK5L_O7jcVrgMYNN_LXn-G-w/s1600/DSCI2080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNlsfNNlZpxzYXj27RcTQ8x8bx5Pr61YOoT_m_JfdroHood7r-60d4Y92w5xlDnZe7Zrd4OzTWEotfhL9EUPLP_wEQVH5VPXGf2hygQgICZDjJ4XjXchpGK5L_O7jcVrgMYNN_LXn-G-w/s320/DSCI2080.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Chocolate colored wool isn't as easy to find as you might think. This all wool sweater will make many bunnies. I was gratified to discover that people prefer dark to white chocolate when it comes to stuffed bunnies. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUyqFcVFChyq19z7VRC6ca36UPl6Ki1YfUJZL9c1mLh3fslYl9x6bAZ22j4bDsTzmfKHoLLkCh6dzYG6-XWJxfm7X6Cj6y6i4mEPnpqAUqacgXvVpET_IbWJGHl1YdraMChUs2r3g0dzk/s1600/DSCI2083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUyqFcVFChyq19z7VRC6ca36UPl6Ki1YfUJZL9c1mLh3fslYl9x6bAZ22j4bDsTzmfKHoLLkCh6dzYG6-XWJxfm7X6Cj6y6i4mEPnpqAUqacgXvVpET_IbWJGHl1YdraMChUs2r3g0dzk/s320/DSCI2083.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The backs are all soft Easter colors and the fronts will get embroidery. Girls face left and boys face right. This makes it easy for the girls to sneak a kiss! Ha!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
These are the tiny hands that were helping me sort through wool for my last blanket. Olivia's 3 and was wrapping piece after piece around her hands talking about handwarmers. It's not the right time of year, but she can keep them for fall.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The piece of pink ribbing seemed impossibly small for such a thing, but 3 year old hands are SO tiny, it was perfect. A little green ribbing for the other end and we were getting there.</div>

<br />
I'm not keeping up with the quantity of blankets I had hoped to make. I thought I could make a new one each week. As much as I love making these, the selection process of the colors bogs me down.<br />
This is the blanket I wanted to make, but before I cut out the star pieces, I really thought it was ugly.<br />
I went ahead and added the solids and it made all the difference.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ONQwNpyYxgMDejOH5FJaW6ut-YPopw6NoTJF56-C4WwGWx56VpCeI94fVrpTLbz9lqMwu9wrzeDOM8TcRJY4s5xzEKXqPbweymyGPY9GCWEqM1PT6RpQPezjUVXlAQh3hq8CQeoXchU/s1600/DSCI1959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ONQwNpyYxgMDejOH5FJaW6ut-YPopw6NoTJF56-C4WwGWx56VpCeI94fVrpTLbz9lqMwu9wrzeDOM8TcRJY4s5xzEKXqPbweymyGPY9GCWEqM1PT6RpQPezjUVXlAQh3hq8CQeoXchU/s320/DSCI1959.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Looking back on this picture, I almost wish I'd put a black border on it. It's laid out on a blanket of the same pattern. Made it really easy to place the pieces.<br />

I had a special request for 15 assorted pouches this last month. No special colors or designs. I just pulled out a bunch of sweater parts in lots of colors and started cutting. What a mess that makes and then I start obsessing about every detail. Some were already made and listed in my shop, I decided they could join the party too.<br />
These don't take long to sew, the selection process is the time killer. If I was making a dozen at a time, all the same, it would be more time-cost effective.<br />

Whether you say carmel or caramel, they're delicious! Before Christmas, I got a craving for homemade carmels. I hadn't made them in years and knew they would be a good addition to all the holiday goodies.<br />
I didn't have a thermometer, so I bought one at the grocery store for $4, how bad could it be? I made one batch that disappeared real fast. Right before the holiday, I made time for 2 batches intended for taking to my family gathering. The first batch went fine and the second seemed to stall at 220 degrees. I watched it forever before I decided the thermometer must be broken. Into the trash with that thing! I saved the carmels, barely.<br />
I went to the kitchen supply store last week and steeled myself to buying a good thermometer, I feared it might be $20-30. Happy to say, it was $10 on sale 10% off. I know good tools are important, why hadn't I gone there first. I've had many a "cheap" thermometer over the years.<br />

Prepare a 9 x 13 pan. Iv'e always buttered it, but discovered a new use for my Silpat. Genius! I just pushed it into the pan and it worked better than anything else I've tried. I only wanted half of my carmels to have nuts.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Add the sugars and butter together and bring up to a boil over medium heat. After it's really at a boil, start adding the cream a little at a time. You have to go slowly and stir a lot to make sure it doesn't boil over. All that liquid in the cream.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When all the cream is in and your sure it won't boil over, let it continue to boil and watch the temperature. It'll stay at 220 degrees or so for quite awhile. When it starts to climb it won't take long.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At 240- 245 degrees, take it off the heat, stir in the vanilla and pour it out into your pan. Don't dawdle.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The nuts all stayed right where they were, Not sure if that was the Silpat or not. The next morning, I put a piece of waxed paper on my cutting board, lifted the Silpat out of the pan and turned it upside down on the paper. I worried about getting any residual garlic or onion flavors. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut them into pretty small cubes, 1/2- 3/4 inch square, they seem to grow when you chew them. Use a sharp knife and wrap them in squares of wax paper. If you don't, they stick right back to each other. Cut a little, wrap a little.</div>

<br />
I saw scrap balls on someones blog months ago, sorry I can't remember where, and thought it would be fun to try. The idea is to keep this next to your sewing machine or work area and keep feeding all the tiny pieces you can't save for something else into it instead of the garbage. You know we crafters will save some pretty small bits to maybe make something else out of them. You know you do.<br />
Since I like to make stuff (pretty much any stuff), I always have remnants of all types. I only begrudgingly throw out the tiniest of pieces. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDyzDmBJff4dZZmIg3hAdLrDP2DylEj0MVPUZsX8H5NzYq0I-6eHy3QLMcJaCy7AL8VPQMszg5VqRrOF_keDGxDMeufxoCCpDe3jyrvyExt7mpYYDTVQxRfPE95WPSDJS7PewP8mOcB5I/s1600/DSCI1921.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDyzDmBJff4dZZmIg3hAdLrDP2DylEj0MVPUZsX8H5NzYq0I-6eHy3QLMcJaCy7AL8VPQMszg5VqRrOF_keDGxDMeufxoCCpDe3jyrvyExt7mpYYDTVQxRfPE95WPSDJS7PewP8mOcB5I/s320/DSCI1921.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The original pattern was the one on the left. After I drew the pattern from the directions they gave, I knew it would be far too large a ball for my liking. I redrafted it in the smaller size and sewed a scrap ball for myself. The resulting ball took quite a long time to fill. I left it sitting by the machine and used it when sewing. It was very easy to get used to putting the scraps into it and fun to watch it slowly fill out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When it felt stuffed so full that I thought I really couldn't get much more in it and still be able to sew it shut, I did just that.</div>

It's pretty heavy for it's size, like a good orange. It would be a good baby toy or a dryer ball.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went along without a new one for a few months before I missed it. There were a lot of tiny (bitty!) scraps in my basket next to the sewing machine. The crafter in me wanted to stuff a new ball and of course, here it comes, I couldn't leave well enough alone. Enter the Acorn Scrap Ball.</div>

You see the original lines of the pattern on the right, I made it pointier and cut off the top. Then I made a circle for the top and gathered it in to fit. A loop and some decorative stitching and I was ready to stuff.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before I stuffed it I'd already drawn a new pattern for the next one. Bigger top and shorter bottom. Do you see a pattern to my craziness here? No project can ever be left simple.</div>

After stuffing, I found that it came out so much larger than the original and less acorny than I thought it would. Maybe the next one will be the smaller top AND the smaller bottom.</div>

I think these would be good to list, unstuffed, in my shop. The round ones, that is, the acorn cap took a lot longer to sew on than I thought it would.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Crafters could make their own dryer balls and have less angst over scraps in the garbage.</div>

Last fall, I was feeling down and short on cash and decided to self medicate with crafting. It almost always works for whatever ails me. I had wanted to try wonky stars and threw the wonky log cabins in to mix it up.<br />
I already had the bird fabric from IKEA and left over batting from Rachel's quilt. The rest of these beauties came form Rachel's scrap bag. She's made so many beautiful things for her Etsy shop, there was lots to choose from.<br />

There was plenty of information on line to guide me through the star construction. In September, I went to the Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting and Ale had a lesson in quilting with perle cotton. Very timely. I've done a lot of quilting, but only with regular quilting thread. This gave me another new thing<br />
to try.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The binding was all pieced from the same fabrics. I accidently made too much and used the extra to make the back more interesting. It's about 48 inches square. If I was to do it over, I'd use a solid for the background. The black and white had too much pattern to give the blocks enough contrast.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have no use for this quilt, but enjoyed the process and it really did work to lift my spirits. I spent a total of $3 on it for the perle cotton with my coupon.</div>

My biggest lesson learned, was that I am not a wonky quilter. This was way out of my comfort zone. I like having things line up.</div>

I finally finished the next blanket. I love this pattern, how different it can look depending on the color arrangement. This is the same pattern as the last blanket, just made to look like individual stars.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs24xHToURg2-4r4xdYChf7xUpO_pf6rCOJHNKGeMvyRp7BAKXdSvQHXPP8bOCSOip-N676DF7BSCMp2C1seMs-dl-ERhw7OXNV3lZRlC1HXSS30IaWK-wJGHlxhqzPo62NPYl4rlQVaE/s1600/DSCI1880.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs24xHToURg2-4r4xdYChf7xUpO_pf6rCOJHNKGeMvyRp7BAKXdSvQHXPP8bOCSOip-N676DF7BSCMp2C1seMs-dl-ERhw7OXNV3lZRlC1HXSS30IaWK-wJGHlxhqzPo62NPYl4rlQVaE/s320/DSCI1880.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was halfway done when the machine suddenly stopped. It wouldn't move at all. Good thing it wasn't in the needle down position.<br />
I started with the darkest sweater. It had lots of pattern and the fancy ribbing looked like it would be perfect for the outer border. If you look closely you can see the button holes.<br />
This sweater was hard to work with, it had 2 layers and it was hard to catch both edges when sewing it together. I went back over a lot of the edges with a long, shallow zig-zag to fasten the layers to each other.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
When I picked up the machine, the repairman said I wouldn't believe how much fiber he took out of it. I told him, I would. Ha!<br />
I need to figure out how to open up the machine so I can periodically dig the fiber out for myself and oil it. My last machine was so easy to service myself.</div>Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03525069019162182783noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5413855362762118661.post-64092361772637221252012-02-18T20:29:00.000-08:002012-02-18T20:29:44.138-08:00Too long<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

I haven't posted anything for so long. Not that I haven't taken pictures and had something to say, we just haven't had internet at home. I've done everything I've needed to do online at free Wifi locations. I get done with browsing or paying bills and then think, I'll get back to my blog next time.<div>
Next time has taken forever. I've made plenty of new blankets and lots of stockings at Christmas. so many pictures and no posts. Poo!</div>
<div>
We still don't have home internet, I think it's time to end this experiment in frugality and get back online. I miss it.</div>
<div>
I've been trying to make a new blanket each week. Soon, I'll have so many blankets in my shop, that nobody will be able to search for anything without one of them popping up! Ha!<br /><br /></div>
</div>Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03525069019162182783noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5413855362762118661.post-71940815082084925592011-09-11T20:30:00.000-07:002011-09-12T23:32:05.787-07:00What happened?<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thinking about the anniversary today. I can't believe it's been 10 years. It was a traumatic day, we were glued to the TV all day. I was on my way to work when I had a knock on the door from my neighbor. We watched for awhile and then it was off to school for the kids and me to work. The breakroom TV had someone at it all day. Not much got done at work that day. So many tears. This anniversary has reminded me to get back to concentrating on the things that make me happy. So, time to post more often.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh no, where did August disappear to? I swear it was July just a few days ago. I've been sewing scarves for the colder months to come. It seems very strange, considering we've finally gotten some decent summer weather. It's been a mild summer, with very few hot days. Not much rain, so that was nice, but nothing to make you feel like summer ever got here. This week we've had 90+ days. Makes me happy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1kxyvqxjQhyphenhyphenktYNFo42ql2adRRYg2itggNfMUjKLWs3Q-F2fs4KaEGWlSFk1M8jrA0HTyvKOh4DfvWbJRE_DOmA4w05D_0zD8rCTHSHvydZJ-bFIchUS0pZiFHVGYB-jU2qItEUAXc0g/s1600/DSCI1668.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1kxyvqxjQhyphenhyphenktYNFo42ql2adRRYg2itggNfMUjKLWs3Q-F2fs4KaEGWlSFk1M8jrA0HTyvKOh4DfvWbJRE_DOmA4w05D_0zD8rCTHSHvydZJ-bFIchUS0pZiFHVGYB-jU2qItEUAXc0g/s400/DSCI1668.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
As I cut into sweaters for my projects, I always save the ribbing. It's so pretty and neatly finished at the one edge, just couldn't bring myself to throw it out. You may have noticed that I have a hard time throwing anything out. Not that I'm a hoarder or anything... really I'm not, I just see potential usability in lots of things. Anyway... I decided they looked like scarf makings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQDAa60610A_k6_eF7RfzyPXnMtJcog5Nik-GQmS_btiEQuAuzk3178A70K1fsLqaaSFqkEcP7HeaxSY8fDKGrJiRzdbMHcr84pS5x4wl_JA0WL3Tn1tu_Ml2RGpe86Fnvam1HA8fe1tM/s1600/DSCI1669.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQDAa60610A_k6_eF7RfzyPXnMtJcog5Nik-GQmS_btiEQuAuzk3178A70K1fsLqaaSFqkEcP7HeaxSY8fDKGrJiRzdbMHcr84pS5x4wl_JA0WL3Tn1tu_Ml2RGpe86Fnvam1HA8fe1tM/s400/DSCI1669.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I ironed all the pieces as flat as possible and cut them into 6 inch pieces. I was even crazy enough to sew the short pieces together to make other 6 inch pieces. I put the 60 inch tape measure out on the floor, started with 2 matching ends and laid out a mish-mash of pieces til I liked the way it looked. After zigzagging all of them together, they were still about 60 inches long. Another ironing and it was done.<br />

With those last 2, I've made 11. I don't have enough ribbing for any more. One has sold and is off to a new home. I love making fun stuff!</div>

All the blankets I've made til now, have been about 40 inches square. So many shops only offer a smaller size, I thought I'd try it out. Trouble is, I can't seem to go simpler, just smaller. These have just as many pieces and took every bit as much time. Poo. I don't know why I can't do simple, all my projects always end up complicated. These are 30 inches square. I do love them, but will probably not make this size again.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Next blankets I make, I really have to time myself. It seems like I spend a lot of hours on each one, but it might be my imagination. I'd like to sell many more, but don't want to give my time away. A timer, plus the fact that I get faster each time. I have such a great family.<br />
This was the last day of my vacation and it was spent being relatively lazy. Good. We went out to dinner. All in all a very good day.</div>Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03525069019162182783noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5413855362762118661.post-11928457575353359342011-06-22T12:57:00.000-07:002011-06-22T22:20:48.025-07:00Graduation at U of O<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Last week, we were in Eugene for my nieces graduation. So proud of her! It was a perfect Oregon day, no rain and just warm enough to be outside for hours watching the graduation and then moving on to the park for the party.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There was Thai food from a local restaurant that she and her friends love. Growing up, he always told us we could go to any college we wanted, except Oregon State. He said it in jest, but he really meant it. Big rivalry here. My niece gave him her sash after the ceremony. It was the sash of gratitude, they were supposed to give it to the person they felt the most gratitude toward for their support through college.</div><br />

We promised the little girls a few rides and elephant ears. Along the way, we got some fresh squeezed lemonade and cotton candy, too. The weather was mild all day, so that meant we needed to take some coats for later in the evening when it got chilly.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We missed the fireworks, at the opening 2 weeks earlier, because I had a lousy chest cold and was completely worn out from coughing all day at work. I really like the items I've made and think they're reasonably priced. I think I don't have enough to choose from. It must be time to make many more items. I've hesitated to make too many things, but everything I read says you need lots of inventory.<br />
The more often I make each thing, the faster I get at it. My favorite thing I make is the glitter stars. I thought these would be a big seller, but they lose something when you don't see them in person.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>The baby/lap blankets are my next favorite. If I could sell 1-2 of them a week, I would be so happy. This week I made another, a new design inspired by Lisa's Flower Garden BOM. I wasn't sure if I was going to put flower or bird appliques on it, until I was through and liked it best without either.<br />

Originally I made them in groups of 4, but it's getting harder to match up more than pairs. So many of these were made for family and then I listed the rest in my shop. Some have sold, but definitely not as many as I'd hoped. I love them so much for their kitchy quality. Very funky chic, if you ask me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfz3YYgBvQH2X4ga7aGSDJF_65AhyphenhyphenNBZaMTVLAPCRtUNxIelkLOhaT3KyZLclEayJnsSXZHo-xcjzSJrPlJ8HPp2VIp-TavNl5e_UCMsMkSr9EYpnu4puZFEBx1mgB2pqr9Ce3NOVh4l4/s1600/DSCI1328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfz3YYgBvQH2X4ga7aGSDJF_65AhyphenhyphenNBZaMTVLAPCRtUNxIelkLOhaT3KyZLclEayJnsSXZHo-xcjzSJrPlJ8HPp2VIp-TavNl5e_UCMsMkSr9EYpnu4puZFEBx1mgB2pqr9Ce3NOVh4l4/s320/DSCI1328.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">All these blocks look like they were cut from scraps or old clothes. Some blocks have pieced squares! Originally, they must have intended 4" squares to make 7" finished blocks. They're all cut a little wonky and sewn a little crooked, so I had to trim them square again and lost about 1/4 inch. The first potholders I made, I was so careful to only trim as much as I had to, to make them square. Bah! What a waste of time. This time I just cut them 7" square. So much easier.</div><br />

I only made the 10 that have the gold backing. Need to look for more material to match the red squares.</div><br />

I'm also a person who likes to make things and didn't want to spend 40 dollars on it. Okay, I'm also a person who's cheap. The first star I made is white and sits on top of the bookcase in my living room. I made tons of mistakes on it, but I still love it. Since then, I've made some for sale in my Etsy shop and for family members. This star is for my sister-in-law, her color request was bronze. I'm not a huge fan of brown, so I was worried that it wouldn't be pretty. The paints at the craft store labeled bronze, all looked copper to me, too orange, so I picked metalic espresso. I couldn't be happier with the results.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg20ZjCixZo6othzeNBdN4yfJyUDfPrF71woUvXcbRQBOj4_7KEteVt1WDfleuE7hyphenhyphenwIlzNPG52cxb0CKH31knlS21D-FIbo5uBzDzNS3qiZ55RbEfsr-FD07OjHB1t0PZVp57K2tbHWFo/s1600/DSCI1291.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg20ZjCixZo6othzeNBdN4yfJyUDfPrF71woUvXcbRQBOj4_7KEteVt1WDfleuE7hyphenhyphenwIlzNPG52cxb0CKH31knlS21D-FIbo5uBzDzNS3qiZ55RbEfsr-FD07OjHB1t0PZVp57K2tbHWFo/s320/DSCI1291.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> This is an 18 point Moravian Star. I trace around my template onto tagboard. These cardboards come in boxes of individual cream cheese packets at my job in the bakery. They would be going into the recycling, but I recycle them into stars, instead. They're the perfect thickness and are already white.<br />
I traced 8 with the triangle notch and 10 without.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZiXtk_4r2SaDXtU85AcwuWCR2xXmS5h2doYaIkzB2f1d1obh5SbmQcI1PzazCN3rS3E9AwLCnRwv2MM6piNR0qRCBqh2miptKcQhbulSIeCqS4pX3jU3Tq9ACD163AW_ynlbMJNoNQU/s1600/DSCI1293.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEZiXtk_4r2SaDXtU85AcwuWCR2xXmS5h2doYaIkzB2f1d1obh5SbmQcI1PzazCN3rS3E9AwLCnRwv2MM6piNR0qRCBqh2miptKcQhbulSIeCqS4pX3jU3Tq9ACD163AW_ynlbMJNoNQU/s320/DSCI1293.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> Here's all my pieces traced, this size fits 2 on a cardboard. On some of them, I traced smaller ones for another star. I try to put as little as possible into the recycling.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgneqRHk0ag-gbmIidPlrCmK3mi2HQ4nXngt9F9SD0X7p_rLw8eHdUrAyCMLJLa89r9VJvWQnkqHiafqTRvwgBTQLCVudaBtAWoj-RkfhgJIbBptuVhN-3aX5q358SwgQ8wczFgrCOUWTI/s1600/DSCI1294.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgneqRHk0ag-gbmIidPlrCmK3mi2HQ4nXngt9F9SD0X7p_rLw8eHdUrAyCMLJLa89r9VJvWQnkqHiafqTRvwgBTQLCVudaBtAWoj-RkfhgJIbBptuVhN-3aX5q358SwgQ8wczFgrCOUWTI/s320/DSCI1294.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> This paper trimmer took so much stress off my hand. Tagboard is easily cut with scissors, but your hand can hurt after cutting this much at a sitting.<br />

They look like a giant campground, 18 tents all lined up. I glue 4 points with triangles around 1 without and repeat for the other side. Then glue the other 8 lined up around 1 half. This picture's of the 2 halves and starting to glue the ring of points onto the left half. You can see, I was testing the paint on it. Then join the 2 halves, being careful to line them up correctly. It takes some finessing, accuracy at every step, helps.<br />
As I was holding and gluing, I thought,"What if I'm squeezing too much into this seam and it drops through onto my other hand?" A split second later, I was trying to get hot glue off my fingers. Yowza! 6 hours of holding an icepack later, I decided, next time, to have a bowl of ice water on the table. Just in case.<br />

I was home by myself the other night and had the freezer paper left over from dinner. I've wanted to try paper piecing, so I drew a couple circles and dug through the scrap bag. What fun! These circles are the dinner plate and small bowl from my everyday dishes. I traced around them onto a 16 inch square. The next day, I stopped at the fabric store on my way home from work and got two half yards of gray. They're a little wonky, my seam allowance around the arcs was probably a scunch too big. Generous 1/4 instead of actual 1/4, like the gray.<br />
Now, I will have to decide if I want to sew more and turn it into a quilt. Eight more blocks would make a nice size throw or baby blanket. Four of them could be reverse pieced. I found the center circle I pieced, didn't go with the arcs at all. They just blended together. That's when I chose a solid for the background.<br />
This was really inspired by the Single Girl Quilt. I like the look, but think I'd rather piece the arcs this way.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5ww1y-oFLYy8JNw-amlAoRwBWnAu7VOER76FudNaPrUmG8yJhQ4EeSlaM7GPw5PXcdmYx-BlyJTMonz7_PYIgtsuTPAOvxjNUlTQecoDqh1NZCzviKXc_QgFQ_xqXKpHMeUCN_zg3wG0/s1600/DSCI0954.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5ww1y-oFLYy8JNw-amlAoRwBWnAu7VOER76FudNaPrUmG8yJhQ4EeSlaM7GPw5PXcdmYx-BlyJTMonz7_PYIgtsuTPAOvxjNUlTQecoDqh1NZCzviKXc_QgFQ_xqXKpHMeUCN_zg3wG0/s320/DSCI0954.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I drew a large circle that's centered 12" away from the center square, every 12 inches along the edge and overlaps every 12" along a line that's 18" from the square. I know, I can't follow me either. Luckily, I drew it all on paper. I knew those drafting classes, for an engineering degree I never completed, would someday come in handy.<br />
I want to sew the binding on, but not cut the excess off, yet. I think it will stabilize the edge and make it easier to put in the hoop to quilt all the way to the edge. After the binding's on, I think there's enough quilting completed to take the basting threads out. I get a finger caught on one at least once every time I turn the hoop around.<br />
I made a lot of binding and can barely stand the wait to see it at the edge.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpZtj_WN6ABtXqCPIZcl_1Gk9Vv_kIs9whOFbC3UYP3XJYnbhYjqMSz5VJPA1I4HuwLEhU2ed3-en6P6_AFU2dzwKY-2smOEkgN30BFPwxJDd-tZ3_GFInX5TzGRlnyc33jTunKwZFuTk/s1600/DSCI1233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpZtj_WN6ABtXqCPIZcl_1Gk9Vv_kIs9whOFbC3UYP3XJYnbhYjqMSz5VJPA1I4HuwLEhU2ed3-en6P6_AFU2dzwKY-2smOEkgN30BFPwxJDd-tZ3_GFInX5TzGRlnyc33jTunKwZFuTk/s320/DSCI1233.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGhB9T-OL_l6VIDRPft6RLT22KlO946Lo0IfteocNHkFInqZwTk7UTn2f7xuUo22t756wWC3VL_2IxlEVbvkq8XvGH02mxek8GC1tVmbIHgdmysqBKng-N2akTnuTzzmy3fAYnF0wRmUY/s1600/DSCI1236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGhB9T-OL_l6VIDRPft6RLT22KlO946Lo0IfteocNHkFInqZwTk7UTn2f7xuUo22t756wWC3VL_2IxlEVbvkq8XvGH02mxek8GC1tVmbIHgdmysqBKng-N2akTnuTzzmy3fAYnF0wRmUY/s320/DSCI1236.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It wasn't as hard to draw the scallop as I feared it would be. Sewing the binding on was as easy as following my pencil line. When it's time to cut off the excess and hand sew the binding to the other side, it will be the perfect last step.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now, I'm considering putting one line of echo quilting around the vines and flowers before I begin the more decorative quilting. I want feathered fans in the big triangles, a couple spiderwebs, some butterflies, maybe a bird or two, decorate the grandmothers fans and flowers in the white space of the fans.</div><br />

This hasn't happened, ever. My job involves working weekends and having 2 days off in the middle of the week. This means that I almost never have days to spend with my kids. We didn't plan any big vacation, just tried to squeeze in a few things we haven't done in awhile. On Thursday, we drove from Portland to the coast and went to the Newport Bay Aquarium. Our group was my youngest daughter, Camille, my oldest daughter, Rachel and her two daughters, Sienna and Olivia. And me. :)<br />

They were both excited, but couldn't be convinced that it wasn't going to be sunny and hot. Oregon beaches don't get much warmer in the summer, either.<br />

We were lucky to get about an hour break from the rain. Just about the time the little girls hands were getting too cold, we started back up the path and felt a few little drops of rain. It poured the rest of the day.<br />

They've been there for 56 years and are locally famous. I'm not a big seafood fan, but I decided to try some of their grilled salmon and I had the clam chowder to start. The few times I've had clam chowder in my life, it was gross. Overly salted, too thick and tasting like old dead fish. Not a big surprise to a non-fish eater. But, if they're famous for their chowder, I can try it. It was great! Why doesn't it all taste like that? The salmon was great, too.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We got Dairy Queen cones as we headed home. All in all, it was a very fine day.</div><br />
